Service Representative
Provides a full range of assistance to beneficiaries and inquirers in person, by telephone or by correspondence regarding all programs administered by the Social Security Administration. Interviews beneficiaries, inquirers or their representatives to determine the nature of their problem or interest. Explains technical provisions, elicits relevant facts and resolves problems with payments or eligibility. Provides beneficiaries with information, advice or instructions about eligibility and benefits being paid under retirement, survivors, disability and Medicare insurance programs and Supplemental Security Income. Good interviewing or correspondence techniques are required to secure accurate information in a courteous, efficient manner. Incumbent must explain various alternatives open to the claimant and advise on the most appropriate course of action.
The length of the training course for these positions is about 12 weeks. Career advancement from these positions can be to a benefit technician examiner, claims technician examiner, claims representative position or to another position in the Teleservice Center.
Salary:
You would likely enter this position at the GS-5 level with a starting salary $30,872. With three years of successful performance, a Service Representative currently receives a salary of $42,351. Regional office can give you a higher starting pay rate if you have relevant past job experience. If rated at the GS-6 level, your starting salary would be $34,412. If you were rated at the GS-7 level because of the completion of relevant graduate degree, you could start at $38,241. The position pays a maximum of $55,058 in 2009. |
